The Slaves of the Padishah

A Transylvanian nobel tries to consolidate Ottoman power over Eastern Europe.

Michael Teleki, a Transylvanian noble and councilor to Prince Apafi, is an ambitious and cunning politician who seeks to increase his power and social status. In order to do that, he attempts to manipulate members of the Ottoman Sultanate to attack Hungary, with hopes that he will become its Palatine. A sequel to ’Midst the Wild Carpathians, The Slaves of the Padishah sees the return of most of the characters of the previous novel. Much like the first installment, this novel is a fictionalized version of real events: in this case, the loss of Turkish control over Hungary and the expansion of the Holy Roman Empire to territories previously controlled by the Sultanate.

How it begins.

The S—— family was one of the richest in Wallachia, and consequently one of the most famous. The head of the family dictated to twelve boyars, collected hearth-money and tithes from four-and-fifty villages, lived nine months in the year at Stambul, held the Sultan’s bridle when he mounted his steed in time of war, contributed two thousand landsknechts to the host of the Pasha of Macedonia, and had permission to keep on his slippers when he entered the inner court of the Seraglio. In the year 1600 and something, George was the name of the firstborn of the S—— family, but with him we shall not have very much concern.
